Every empty stomach has a story

The danger in Sudan forced a mother and her son to flee to Chad in search of safety.

On October 16, we’ll celebrate World Food Day — the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and a global effort to shine a spotlight on hunger. The spotlight will need to be large, indeed, as a staggering 319 million people around the world are facing acute hunger. The forces behind the current global hunger crisis are heavy and complex, but the work in front of us is simple: to be the love of Jesus to a world in deep need

A driving force of hunger

People go hungry for many reasons. Every empty stomach has a story, and these stories are often layered. But conflict is a common thread through many stories, driving hunger levels on a massive scale.

In Sudan, armed violence is forcing families to run for safety, leaving their communities and sources of stability behind. Each story is gut-wrenching, like Tahani’s.

Tahani and her young twins, Adam and Adeeb, found themselves in dire circumstances; they’d escaped the conflict in Sudan and crossed the Chad border, but grew hungry to the point of severe malnourishment. Tahani couldn’t breastfeed her children, and they arrived at a nutrition center extremely underweight, with little hope of survival.

But when World Vision supporters funded a water system and electricity to the nutrition center, the clinic was able to expand the care they provided to their patients — and offer fortified milk mixed with clean water to the twins. With treatment, both boys regained their strength. And their mother regained her hope for their future.

After arriving at a nutrition clinic severely malnourished (pictured left), twins Adam and Adeeb grew stronger after receiving critically needed treatment.

Over the last 15 years, 88% of the severely malnourished children we treated made a full recovery

There is hope and help for children who are trying to escape the grip of hunger. As followers of Jesus, we’re called to not only see the vulnerable as He does, but to serve them.
