World Vision Water Impact in First 6 Months of Fiscal Year 2021
We recently held an update call to share the semi-annual results of our water, sanitation, and hygiene program both from an aggregate global level and in countries that many of our donor’s support. We also shared a new dashboard view of how we will report our data in the future. This new approach is not yet quite ready for launch but because you are our most significant investors, we want to give you a peak at this exciting new innovation. You can listen to our 30-minute call here.
Here’s a summary of some of what we covered in the call.
Global Results
In the first half of FY21, with the support of our donor partners and working with communities, World Vision reached 1.2 million people with clean water, 1.2 million people with improved sanitation, and 1.6 million people with handwashing facilities. We also reached nearly 3,000 schools with handwashing facilities and more than 800 healthcare facilities with handwashing facilities.
Ethiopia
Year after Year, World Vision Ethiopia delivers the biggest impact in reaching people with clean water which is fitting since it’s one of the places with the most need in all of sub-Saharan Africa. As shown below, we were above target for each of our core indicators. We also trained more than 900 faith leaders so they could promote healthy water, sanitation, and hygiene behaviors with their congregations. The semi-annual report for Ethiopia is here.
Honduras
During this reporting period, Honduras was rebuilding following the devastation of hurricanes ETA and IOTA. Due to the hard work of the people in the communities that we serve, almost all of the water systems that were damaged have now recovered. This focus on rebuilding allowed us to overachieve on our targets for water systems and the focus on preventing the spread of COVID resulted in beating our target for providing handwashing facilities. However, this focus on water and hygiene access resulted in not meeting our target for sanitation. The semi-annual report for Honduras is here.
Kenya
Similar to Honduras, we exceeded our targets for providing access to clean water and handwashing facilities and did not meet our semi-annual target for providing sanitation. The higher priority on access to water and handwashing facilities during COVID not only positively impacted people in communities but meant that we more than doubled our targets for clean water access and handwashing facilities in schools. The semi-annual report for Kenya is here.
Rwanda
We didn’t reach our water targets in the first half of FY21 because changes in government policies slowed the process for procuring some of the equipment needed to construct water systems. Two water systems expected to be completed in the first half of FY21 will be finished later this year and will keep us on track both for our annual targets and for finishing the job of reaching everyone everywhere we work with basic clean water access by 2023. While waiting for the equipment, our team took the opportunity to really focus on providing handwashing facilities in schools and health care centers and reached 218 schools (18x target) and 122 health care centers (an amazing 30x target). The semi-annual report for Rwanda is here.
Zambia
Our team in Zambia is excited about delivering on our commitment to reach everyone, everywhere we work with clean water by 2025 and responded by exceeding our semi-annual targets. Similar to Rwanda, we also put an emphasis on handwashing facilities and reached 130 health care centers versus our target of 5, and 171 schools versus our target of 3. The semi-annual report for Zambia is here.
We encourage you to hear more details of our results and see a demonstration of the new dashboard reporting here. Thank you for being part of this work. Zambia.
