World Vision, with the support of our donor partners, is making a new commitment to reach everyone, everywhere we work with clean water in the entire country of Honduras. There are an estimated 1.2 million people in the rural areas of Honduras that lack access to clean water and World Vision commits to reach more than half of them—650,000 people with clean water between 2022-2027. Not only is clean water essential to health and livelihoods—the lack of clean water is indeed a root cause of migration.
This effort will require more than tripling the impact achieved over the previous six years. We are confident that, provided we get the needed financial resources, we can get this done based on our success in scaling up efforts in Rwanda in order to reach everyone, everywhere we work with clean water there. We are beginning to increase our team size and capacity in Honduras in faith that the resources will be raised to reach this ambitious goal.
In addition to providing clean water access for people’s homes, we’ll equip healthcare workers in Honduras to prevent the spread of infections in 125 healthcare centers through access to clean water, handwashing stations, and sanitation. And, we’ll reach an amazing 1,000 schools with clean water, handwashing facilities, and sanitation. In addition, we’ll continue to teach children about healthy habits of using clean water and hygiene through our partnership with Sesame Street called WASH-Up!
Our work in Honduras aims to ensure access and empowerment for all. That includes equal representation and voices of women on water management committees and girls in school WASH-UP! clubs. It also means providing schools and healthcare centers with latrines that are equipped for menstrual hygiene management—helping to keep girls in school.
In Honduras, World Vision has been instrumental in cultivating relationships with faith leaders who develop devotional materials and participate in conflict resolution. We equip faith leaders to share messages on healthy habits related to water, sanitation, and hygiene with their parishioners and champion practices in their communities. This helps ensure that the interventions we are providing with communities are sustainable.
In order to finish the job in Honduras we will need to raise $60 million from U.S. donors. This is a huge goal but represents less than $100 per person whose life will be transformed.
We are thrilled to share that in order to kick-off this effort, Christine and Cody Nath along with their company, RTI, has agreed to match up to $1 million in new donations this fiscal year towards Finish the Job Honduras. We thank them for their incredible generosity.
In order for you to see how we are doing this work and experience the incredible resilience and determination of the people who we are honored to work with, we have prepared a new video about our work in Honduras as well as a written description of this offer.
