Happy International Day of the Girl!

Today, we celebrate the International Day of the Girl by focusing on three stories of girls who inspire us. Each of these girls have taken the initiative to make a difference, and each is doing her part to help solve the global water crisis.

Refugee Girl in Rwanda

Murakatata, 14 years old, and her family fled deadly conflict in the DR Congo for Rwanda. Her leg was injured during the journey. She did not have access to adequate healthcare, so infection spread, and her leg had to be amputated. Murakatata good

Upon arriving in Rwanda, she faced a difficult situation in the refugee camp. She lacked access to clean water, and found it challenging to collect water from the nearby swamp. Additionally, she did not have access to sanitary products during her period, there was no hand-washing station at her school, and she was teased for taking a long time (due to her disability) in the bathroom. She was struggling and losing confidence. Then, World Vision arrived to lead the provision of water, sanitation, and hygiene in her refugee camp, school, and neighboring community.

Murakatata now has a clean water source just around the corner from her home, and she has a way to manage her periods - including receiving Always pads at school. The school now has hand-washing stations with soap, and a special toilet designed especially for her and other students with disabilities.

Today, Murakatata is making top scores in school, which makes her parents very proud of her. She has a contagious smile, and a confidence that is palpable. She’s now a leader and symbol of strength in her school. The dignity she's gained from improved water, sanitation, and sanitation has motivated her to continue pushing barriers. One day, she hopes to be a physician. You should count on it!

One Strong Girl

Sawyer Anderson

Meet Sawyer Anderson. Her Dad took a trip to Zambia with World Vision in 2017. When he came home and shared his experience with 10-year old Sawyer, she decided she had to do something to help. That's where some of us grown-ups get stuck. We decide we want to do something but then get distracted or overthink it. Not Sawyer. This girl went for it.  First, she sold cookies at her Grandma's garage sale. Then, she wrote and illustrated a children's book. And now, she's making chitenge bags with her own signature label. Check it out, here!

Bugs for Water?

Our water team received a letter from two young girls making a donation to our water program and it inspired us. Then we ran across this short video about the donation and it touched our hearts. Advance warning to Dads with girls of any age – this may touch your heart as well. LINK
