UNC Water Institute Evaluation

An evaluation of World Vision's water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) program was conducted by the Water Institute at the University of North Carolina in 14 countries. This was one of the largest evaluations of its kind and involved more than 35,000 household surveys, analysis of nearly 3,000 microbial water quality samples, and evaluation of WASH in 2,000 health care facilities and more than 2,600 schools.

Water Cup

Clean Water. Overall, the study showed that our investment in providing clean water to communities is working. The results showed that World Vision program areas had a significantly higher level of basic water access compared to areas where World Vision doesn't work in Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia. In Rwanda, Niger, and India, the non-World Vision areas had higher basic water service levels than in World Vision areas. The higher water access in World Vision areas in Ethiopia and Zambia are consistent with the fact that Ethiopia and Zambia are among the top investment countries for World Vision. To see our impact and the results, we have prepared 2-page summaries of the results of the UNC evaluation for both ETHIOPIA and ZAMBIA that you can access here.

Water service levels in schools were higher in World Vision compared to non-World Vision comparison areas in Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.

Basic or limited water service levels in health care facilities was generally high and there were no consistent differences between World Vision and non-World Vision area.

   Latrine

Water Quality, Hygiene and Sanitation. There were no consistent differences between World Vision and non-World Vision areas in these areas and overall service levels needed improvement. Few health care facilities or schools had basic hygiene services with water and soap available for handwashing. To help address these challenges, World Vision is working with faith leaders on teaching behavior change and equipping kids to educate their peers on safe hygiene habits, and building up sanitation infrastructure.
