Welcome to the World Vision Water newsletter where we share the latest on our efforts to provide clean water and dignified sanitation and hygiene in order to transform the lives of millions of people each year. Thank you for being part of this journey to reach everyone, everywhere we work with clean water by 2030.

World Vision Water 2018 Results

We are pleased to share the 2018 fiscal year results of World Vision’s global water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) program.  It’s been a year of tremendous impact, reaching 4 million people with clean water, 2.8 million with sanitation, and 5 million with hygiene. We continue to have an industry leading effort that is reaching one new person with clean water every 10 seconds!

    Feb 1

We remain committed to reaching everyone, everywhere we work with clean water by 2030—an ambitious but achievable goal that means reaching 50 million people between 2015 and 2030.  As an interim goal—and to make sure we remain on track—we’ve committed to reach 20 million people between 2015 and 2020. This report demonstrates that we are on track to fulfill that commitment, having reached 12.7 million people with clean water in the first three years of this five-year commitment.  For perspective, this is 200,000 more people than we reached in the entire For Every Child campaign.

The results of other key indicators include: Building 53,830 water points, 499,244 sanitation facilities, and 494,067 hand-washing facilities; 414,977 households equipped with water treatment techniques; 6,735 water committees formed; 3,658 communities certified as Open Defecation Free; 13,108 faith leaders trained in WASH behavior change; more than half a million children provided a clean drinking water source, latrine, and hand-washing station at school; and, $145.6 million spent. You can access the full report here.

Going forward, we will continue to focus on providing effective WASH in homes, schools, and health clinics using an integrated approach that empowers local stakeholders to adopt and sustain these life-transforming behaviors and to ensure that water continues to flow.

We thank you for being part of this journey with us and for being part of this historic effort to end the global water and sanitation crisis within our lifetimes.

New Research in World Vision Ghana Areas Shows High Return on Investment

Feb 3
A study recently published in Global Health Action documents the cost benefits of providing water points. The study was conducted in areas where World Vision Ghana is working and examined the costs of providing water infrastructure including the initial drilling and well installation costs as well as estimates of ongoing maintenance and operation versus the estimated economic benefits. It showed that a $1 investment in a borehole provided $9.40 worth of economic benefit. The return was even greater ($14.10 in return for $1 invested) when examining borehole rehabilitation due to the lower costs of eliminating the drilling. The greatest economic benefit was in time-savings of adults that could be put towards economic benefits (68% of the benefit) followed by future economic advantage of reduced child deaths (15% of the benefit). The study used a conservative approach and did not attempt to include benefits of enhanced education, nutrition, or reduction in other diseases such pneumonia or trachoma.

Come and See

We’d love for you to consider coming to see our progress in Rwanda. I’m leading a trip from May 5-10, 2019 and there are a few spots still available. You can also help by hosting an event to build support such as a Wine to Water event. Contact your Rep or email Kimberly Barta for more information.

Prayer

Praise for our 2018 results that demonstrate World Vision continues to have an extraordinary impact in helping solve the global water crisis and giving water to the least of these.

Praise for the results of the Ghana research showing that an investment in water access for the poor is one of the best investments to transform lives.

Pray for the success of our March annual gathering of our National Leadership Council and Every Last One Conference.
