Monthly Newsletter: December 2019

In this Christmas season, our newsletter focuses on some of the most needy people on the planet, and how World Vision is responding through our donors and partners. We are reminded of Jesus’ admonition to us: “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me" (Matthew 25:40, 45, NIV).

Providing Water and Sanitation in Emergencies

When a disaster hits and impacts the most needy, World Vision quickly responds by providing life-saving essentials including food, shelter, emergency health services, safe places for children to learn and play, and emergency water, sanitation, and hygiene. This work saves lives, reduces suffering, and ensures that families can begin to rebuild their lives and livelihoods.

A natural or man-made disaster delivers the heaviest blow to the most vulnerable – especially children – and often in the most fragile parts of the world.  One in every six children on the planet are now living in a global conflict zone.

World Vision’s presence in nearly 100 countries, along with our rapid response teams and strategically located warehouses, allow us to respond quickly. In fact, we have 600 disaster experts spread across the world, ready to respond quickly. And time can save lives in these situations.

Just in the last two years, we’ve provided clean water to more than 1 million people in emergency situations, and provided emergency hygiene for nearly 1 million people while reaching hundreds of thousands with emergency sanitation

Because World Vision works with global partners in responding to disasters, we’re able to multiply donations from private donors many fold.   In fact, World Vision is frequently able to multiply private donations ten-fold or more in disaster response.Murakatata good

To help show our impact during emergencies, we’ve created a video telling the story of Murakatata, a Congolese refugee who fled to Rwanda during conflict. Her leg had to be amputated because of an injury during the journey. She arrived into Rwanda in a desperate situation without clean water and little food. There were no latrines, no way to continue her education, and no dignified place to bath. This all changed starting with a water system provided by World Vision that served 10,000 people! Learn about the rest of Murakatata’s story here.

Southern Africa Drought

While the situation is now stable for Murakatata, there is a current crisis that deserves our attention this Christmas season. The number of hungry children and adults living through Southern Africa’s worst drought in 35 years will soon be so vast that if put together would stretch one and a half times around the earth. A record 45 million people living in 16 countries across the region will experience food shortages within six months. Climate change and more rapidly repeating, severe drought cycles are trapping people in a vicious cycle of poverty. World Vision is responding across 7 countries - Angola, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. We are appealing for $44 million to address urgent humanitarian needs including water and sanitation interventions and nutrition/food assistance.

Reports of Your Impact

In addition to country and global semi-annual reports showing the impact of investments in providing clean water, sanitation, and hygiene, we have started providing reports for specific water points and health care facilities. If you’re interested in these, please contact your donor representative.

For every donation of $12,500, we will provide a report of a specific water point that has been funded. This will include a photo with GPS coordinates, and the number of people who have benefited from the gift. We will provide these reports for Kenya and Rwanda. We will typically be able to provide the report in 12 months. More information is HERE.

News Flash

CNN Heroes has selected an Ethiopian,Freweini Mebrahtu, who has championed menstrual hygiene as their Hero for 2019. Menstrual hygiene management is a critical part of World Vision’s water, sanitation, and hygiene efforts because of the positive impact that occurs when girls understand puberty and have a way to manage their periods. We applaud this effort by our colleague. Watch the CNN spotlight here
