We’re on Track to Reach 20 Million People with Clean Water by 2020

World Vision and our partners are committed to reaching everyone everywhere we work with clean water by 2030, which is about 50 million people. To launch this vision and track our progress towards reaching this stretching and audacious goal, we established a foundational goal of reaching 20 million people with clean water between 2016-2020. With this report, we are now midpoint into the 5-year commitment, and are thrilled and humbled to announce that we are on track and have now reached 10.4 million people with clean water. This includes reaching 1.5 million people during the first half of fiscal year 2018. You can review our six month report of our water, sanitation, and hygiene efforts here.

water_newsletter3Through our partnership, we provide communities in rural areas with sustained water points including hand pumps, mechanized solar powered water systems, and pipelines from protected springs. This approach was used to reach a total of 9.1 million people in 40 countries since 2015, including more than one million people during this reporting period.

In response to our call to reach the most vulnerable, we are now also reaching a large number of people in fragile states by rehabilitating municipal water systems. Since 2016, we reached 1.3 million people with municipal water in the Middle East region including more than 500,000 people during this reporting period.

water_newsletterIn many areas, our teams are challenged to respond to emergencies such as in Zambia where we are providing water wells and latrines for refugees from DR Congo. In this reporting period, we reached more than 400,000 people with emergency drinking water supplies.

World Vision remains committed to continuing our work to reach people with dignified and safe sanitation and hygiene. During this reporting period, in the communities in which we work, we reached 2.3 million people with hygiene behavior change promotion and more than 1 million people gained access to household sanitation facilities. We are striving to deepen the impact of this sanitation and hygiene work as evidenced by the expansion of our collaboration with Sesame Street called WASH-UP! in more schools across 11 countries, and behavior-change efforts such as Community Led Total Sanitation that resulted in 9,608 communities certified as Open Defecation Free since 2015.

water_newsletter2We celebrate these achievements, and for being on track to reach our 2030 goal of 50 milli
on people. We do, however, realize our work is far from being done and is only possible with additional support. Our goal is audacious and requires partnering with communities, our donors and partners, governments, and the international development sector.

Together, we will work to maintain our current rate of reaching one new person with clean water every 10 seconds.

With everyone doing their part, we can achieve a world where everyone has access to clean water and safe sanitation and hygiene. Thank you for being on this journey with us.
