Celebrating the impact of clean water

This newsletter celebrates progress made in the first six months of fiscal year 2025 (FY25). We are now 2.5 years into our 8-year commitment to reach 30 million people with clean water access between 2023 and 2030 and have reached 7.3 million people toward that goal.

With the generous support of our donors in the first half of FY25, we reached 1,092,986 people with clean water (126% of target), saw 829,036 people gain household sanitation (114% of target), and supported construction of handwashing facilities being used by 1,046,443 people (107% of target).

In Rwanda, although we completed our commitment last fiscal year to reach everyone, everywhere we work in 39 sectors of the country, the team continued the momentum, moving to new areas in partnership with co-financing from the district government, and reached more people (132,426 people) with clean water access than in any other country in our business plan.

Our next finish-the-job effort in Africa is in Zambia, which had the second-largest impact of any country by reaching 109,583 people. We have now reached 873,825 people, exceeding our original commitment to reach 800,000 people, and we anticipate completing the work next fiscal year to reach everyone, everywhere we work in 29 wards of the country.  As shared previously, we have finished the funding needed for this effort in Zambia. The maps below show our progress to date and forecast for finishing the job.

In Honduras, we aim to finish the job by 2028, reaching 650,000 people in 49 municipalities. To date, we have reached 279,325 people or 43% of the total commitment.  We celebrate that the government has now signed off on universal coverage in 16 municipalities, with final verification ongoing from the World Vision team. We need to raise an additional $18.5 million to complete the work in Honduras. The maps below show our progress to date and forecast to finish the job.

We now seek to finish the job in Ghana by reaching 700,000 people in 23 districts by 2032 which includes upgrading 500 schools and 200 healthcare facilities. This new commitment will require a total of $85 million from U.S. water and health donors. Here’s a summary of this exciting new offer.

In alignment with our business plan goals to enhance water supply services, only 2% of water points were hand pumps, while 20% were community taps, and 78% were household connections. By relying less on hand pumps and piping water closer to people’s homes, we are able to reduce water collection time and reduce the chances of recontamination of water during transport. To support the sustainability and quality of these systems, we established and trained 1,591 water committees (114% of target) and saw 2,416 businesses (184% of target) actively involved in repairing water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities and providing relevant products.

We achieved significant impact at healthcare facilities and schools, equipping 123 health centers (88% of target) and 391 schools (108% of target) with access to water. Through our work, 252 health facilities (101% of target) and 723 schools (103% of target) gained handwashing stations as well.

Recognizing their influence in the community, we trained 4,504 faith leaders (216% of target) on hygiene and sanitation behaviors. Empowering women also remained a top priority. In the first half of FY25, we saw 775 women become active in businesses related to our water efforts and 1,249 women trained in advocacy, furthering our commitment to amplify women’s voices in development, knowing that it so heavily impacts their lives.

Update on health impact

We are on track with our commitment to upgrade 3,000 healthcare clinics by 2030, having upgraded 955 facilities so far. We expect to finish the work in both Zambia and Rwanda by the end of the calendar year to fulfill our commitment to finish the job and upgrade all the health care facilities everywhere we work in Rwanda. In Zambia, work is expected to be complete before the end of this calendar year as shown in the maps below. We are also on track to finish the job in Niger of upgrading all of the clinics everywhere we work by the end of next year.

Our next effort to finish the job in health will be in Ghana, where we commit to upgrade 200 health clinics in 23 districts of the country. This builds on expertise we have developed in upgrading clinics in Ghana funded by several partners including the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. Since 2016, World Vision has upgraded 172 clinics in Ghana, reaching an estimated 1.5 million people with improved healthcare.

Our partnership with the Rotary Foundation and other partners in Zambia to train and equip community health workers is on track. This novel effort not only trains these health heroes to diagnose and refer people with illnesses to clinics, but also trains and equips them to immediately treat people in the remote areas where they work, thereby saving lives. Generous donor partners have funded 70 of the $25,000 offer that we have to train the workers at specific clinics.  We need to raise an additional $3.1M to complete this work that has the overall goal of eradicating malaria in Zambia.

If we had clean water

Here’s a poignant story from World Vision’s Laura Reinhardt and Jon Warren that reminds us why it’s so vital that we work to equip health clinics and communities with clean water and improved hygiene.

Praise and prayer requests

Give thanks for the millions of people whose lives have been transformed with the gifts of clean water and improved health.

Pray that our new effort in Ghana will achieve the same success that our previous finish-the-job efforts have achieved — to God’s glory.

Pray for our teams as they complete the planning for our next five-year business plan that will continue us on our journey of improved quality and provide the individual country targets enabling us to reach our 2030 goals.
