This newsletter shares exciting updates about new funding milestones for World Vision’s Water and Health “finish the job” efforts; a transformative new effort in our Health sector; and a summary of our mid-year results in Water and Health.
Zambia ‘Finish the Job’ now fully funded!
We needed to raise $50 million to finish the job of reaching everyone, everywhere we work in Zambia with access to clean water. Thanks to recent gifts, this work is now fully funded through either long-term commitments or donations already provided. We are deeply thankful to God for His provision, and to everyone who is a part of this transformative effort! Thank you in advance to everyone who is fulfilling the outstanding commitments for this work.
Change in Zambia 'Finish the Job' target
Based on our use of advanced mapping technology to better define where we work in Zambia, we now need to reach approximately 1 million people rather than the previously communicated (original) goal of 800,000 people. We are still on target to reach 800,000 people by 2025, and we will reach the full 1 million people in 2026. The map below shows the 29 areas in which these 1 million people live. We have already completed the work in four of these areas!
Niger health clinics now fully funded!
Following the successful funding of upgrades for all the healthcare facilities across our Rwanda and Zambia program areas (139 clinics), we now have the financial commitments needed for the same upgrades across our Niger program areas (150 clinics). Our team leveraged funding from U.S. donors to obtain a $750,000 grant from the World Health Organization, and one generous donor couple committed to fund the remaining facility upgrades.
These successes encourage us in our commitment to reach everyone, everywhere we work with access to clean water and improved healthcare. No effort is too small when 1,000 children are dying every day from diseases caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation and hygiene.
New partnership with Rotary and Gates
World Vision, the Rotary Foundation, and the Gates Foundation have announced a $21 million effort to reduce the leading causes of illness and death for children in sub-Saharan Africa. This effort will leverage World Vision’s global leadership in the training of community health workers, equipping community health workers in Zambia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Mozambique to diagnose and treat malaria, pneumonia, and diarrhea as well as screen children for malnutrition. Investing in the empowerment of community health workers is one of the most effective strategies to save lives. Read Rotary Press Release
Mid-year results
We made tremendous progress in the first six months of FY24, keeping us on track to reach all of our 2030 commitments. We reached 1,067,430 people with clean water access (102% of target), 954,146 people with improved sanitation (123% of target), and 1,115,451 people with handwashing facilities (111% of target). We also reached 342,575 people with emergency water services and 338,964 people with emergency hygiene supplies.
In Zambia, as of this reporting period, we have reached 666,113 people (out of a goal of 1 million), including 69,400 people (121% of target) since October 2023. In Honduras, we have reached 92,493 people with access to clean water, and we aim to finish the job of ensuring clean water access for everyone, everywhere we work in the country (650,000 people) by 2027.
In alignment with our goals to enhance water supply services, only 3% of water points were hand pumps, while 24% were community taps and 73% were household connections. We established and trained 2,438 water committees (157% of target) and trained 5,265 faith leaders (185% of target) to understand and promote positive hygiene and sanitation behaviors in their communities. We provided water access in 128 health centers (105% of target) and 346 schools (95% of target), while also installing handwashing stations in 411 healthcare facilities (217% of target) and 854 schools (125% of target). We have now upgraded a total of 572 healthcare facilities toward our 2030 goal of 3,000 clinics.
