World Vision's Water and Health efforts are saving lives
The world is facing a massive hunger crisis. Nearly 45 million people in 37 countries risk starvation. Conflict, COVID-19, and extreme weather are acting as drivers of this crisis.
World Vision is responding to this global emergency; we plan to reach 22 million people in 26 countries of the highest concern. Sixteen of these countries are in Africa and the crisis there is receiving little attention.
Unfortunately, much of Africa has experienced multiple years of drought and starvation. We prepared a video to share how World Vision is responding. We encourage you to watch this video. One of the most impactful statements from the video is that World Vision knows how to save lives.
Our Water and Health efforts are some of the most important work World Vision does to address this hunger crisis. For example, half of malnutrition is due to diarrhea and through World Vision’s water, sanitation, and hygiene efforts, we help eliminate diarrhea and thereby address malnutrition. Also, by bringing permanent water sources to communities, we can help eliminate this ongoing cycle of drought and starvation both by preventing diarrhea as well as providing water for growing nutritious food.
Thankfully, due to donor support we have been able to have a massive response to this massive crisis. In 2022, we reached more than 3 million people with permanent water sources. We also reached 786,678 people with emergency water and 345,637 people with emergency hygiene supplies. Given our relationships and capability to work with faith leaders as influencers in their communities, in 2022, World Vision trained 11,820 faith leaders on hygiene and sanitation behaviors necessary to prevent diarrhea.
Our Health efforts are equally effective in saving lives. World Vision has an amazing track record of achieving 89% recovery of severely malnourished children when they participate in World Vision feeding programs. During the current crisis, this is saving a tremendous number of lives. During 2022, we were able to reach more than 410,000 children in our feeding programs.
While 2022 was a year of tremendous impact, more is required of us in the year ahead. This is a uniquely devastating crisis to which we are called to respond. Thank you for being part of our effort.
Prayer requests
Pray that World Vision is able to respond to Jesus' call to serve the poor as expressed in Matthew 25:35-40, "For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink."
Give thanks for the effectiveness and scale of impact that we have to save lives during this crisis.
Pray for comfort for the families who are going hungry and particularly for those who are losing children to starvation.
