Thanks to the unwavering support of our donor partners, we have completed our third five-year global Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene business plan (fiscal years 2021 to 2025). During this period, we achieved our goal of reaching 15 million people with clean water access. We also reached 12.2 million people with improved sanitation and 15.5 million people with handwashing facilities. Since 2016, World Vision has provided access to clean water for 34.5 million people—more than the population of Texas. We continue to be the leading nongovernmental provider of clean water.
During this business plan, we also upgraded over 7,000 schools and over 2,000 healthcare facilities. We partnered with local governments to develop over 300 district-level master plans that included cost-sharing. Our teams mapped nearly 200,000 water points, making World Vision one of the top providers of water system data. We enabled tens of thousands of local businesses as well as trained over 50,000 faith leaders.
Importantly, we invested in understanding more about the disproportionate burden of water collecting and hauling on women and girls so that we can create solutions better designed to lift that burden.

This is the best way to understand our new goals and commitments.
Driving results through adversity
We faced some strong headwinds this year including disruptions in our national offices due to funding cuts including USAID cuts, security issues, and some supply chain issues. Despite these challenges, we reached 90% of our goal for providing clean water access (2.85 million people), 87% of our goal for sanitation (2.24 million people), and 85% of our goal for handwashing facilities (2.79 million people).
Finish the job highlights
Zambia: In 2021, we committed to finish the job of reaching everyone, everywhere we work in 29 areas of the country. This followed a successful finish the job effort in 39 areas of Rwanda that resulted in us providing clean water to 1.2 million people. In Zambia, with 216,961 people reached this year, we have now reached 983,203 people towards our goal of 1 million people.
Honduras: Our goal is to reach 650,000 people with clean water access in 49 municipalities by 2030. We are now more than half-way towards our goal having reached 332,695 people including 109,226 people this year.
Ghana: We are launching our newest “Finish the Job” effort this fiscal year starting with the strong momentum of 97,183 people reached with clean water access so far. Our goal is to reach an additional 700,000 people with clean water access in 23 areas of the country by 2032 while also upgrading 500 schools and 200 healthcare centers.
Advancing quality and sustainability
In our efforts to improve the quality and reliability of water services we can report:
Only 2% of water points were hand pumps
20% were community taps
78% were household connections
We also strengthened sustainability by:
Forming and training 4,576 water committees (103% of target)
Supporting 5,511 businesses (145% of target) involved in repairing facilities and providing water, sanitation, and hygiene services and products
Empowering communities
Empowering women and engaging faith leaders remain central to our mission, ensuring that those most affected by water, sanitation, and hygiene issues have a voice and a role in the solution. We are proud to report:
6,720 trained faith leaders (132% of target) are promoting hygiene and sanitation behaviors in their congregations and communities
1,479 women-led businesses were impacted
4,605 women were trained in advocacy
Year-end Health results
We are on track with our commitment to upgrade 3,000 health clinics by 2030 having upgraded 1,189 health clinics in the first three years of our commitment. This effort helps ensure dignified and safe deliveries for mothers and helps prevent the spread of infections.
We are also on track with efforts to train community health workers to diagnose and treat the top killers of children, with excellent progress with both the fundraising efforts and the work in Zambia, and training of the workers beginning in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mozambique. In the three year evaluation of the effort in Zambia, community health workers diagnosed and treated 1.3 million cases of malaria which was more than in healthcare facilities in most districts and demonstrates this effort is saving lives.
Our efforts to finish the job of upgrading all the health clinics everywhere we work in 29 areas of Zambia will complete this year with 153 health clinics reached to date, surpassing our commitment to reach 145 clinics. We have completed a previous commitment of upgrading 21 health clinics in Rwanda and will complete a commitment of upgrading 125 clinics in Niger this fiscal year. We are launching our newest finish the job effort in Ghana where we will seek to upgrade 200 clinics in 23 areas of the country by 2032. This effort will require $25 million from U.S. donors.
