MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

This newsletter will now be delivered every other month, and this issue is full of exciting news — so it's a little longer!

2023 year-end results

Thanks to the support of our donor partners and our amazing staff, World Vision has reached 28.6 million people with life-giving clean water since 2016. In fiscal year 2023, we reached nearly 3.1 million people with clean water (101% of target), nearly 2.5 million people with improved sanitation (103% of target), and 2.9 million people with handwashing facilities (91% of target). In response to humanitarian needs caused by disasters like civil war, drought, and food crisis, we provided nearly 750,000 people with emergency water and 1 million people with emergency hygiene supplies.

A top priority and commitment of our work is to empower women and girls. To that end, we reached more than 1.6 million women and girls with clean water, saw 2,290 women become active in water, sanitation, and hygiene related businesses, and trained 4,045 women on advocacy to help ensure the sustainability of water points.

We are thrilled to share that we have exceeded the commitment we made to our donors, partners, and the government of Rwanda in 2018 to reach 1 million people with clean water by reaching 1,181,958 people — including an impressive 270,084 people this fiscal year (128% of target). Over the course of this five-year effort, we saw the number of people gaining access to clean water increase from an average of 50,000 a year to more than 200,000 each year. During this same period, we also exceeded on our health goals, by upgrading 81 healthcare facilities with clean water (111% of target) and by equipping 228 healthcare facilities with handwashing facilities (456% of target).

Our next "finish the job" country is Zambia, where we aim to reach 800,000 people and upgrade 125 healthcare facilities with clean water by 2025. We have now reached 644,126 people with clean water, including 200,223 people this fiscal year (122% of target), and we have upgraded 106 health clinics, including 22 clinics this year (88% of target). We have raised $38 million of the $50 million needed to hit our water goal in Zambia  in 2025 and have raised the funding needed for the health clinics.

We are also moving forward on our goal to finish the job in Honduras by reaching 650,000 people and upgrading 125 health clinics with clean water by 2027. In the first two years of this effort, we've reached 68,101 people and upgraded 34 clinics, and we have raised $22 million of the $60 million needed for success in Honduras.

We also aim to help increase the quality of water supply services in the communities we come alongside. Today, only 2% of water points in those communities are hand pumps, while 33% are community taps and 65% are household water connections.

Other fiscal year accomplishments include:

  • 5,641 water committees established and trained to support operating and maintaining water systems (131% of target)
  • 10,466 faith leaders trained on hygiene and sanitation behaviors to help influence their communities (152% of target)
  • 1,562 schools reached with clean water access
  • 3,232 schools equipped with handwashing stations
  • 444 health centers upgraded with clean water and 626 with handwashing facilities

The work in healthcare facilities means we are on track with our commitment to upgrade 3,000 healthcare facilities by 2030. Thank you for your partnership in equipping vulnerable people for fuller and healthier lives.

National Christian Foundation (NCF) article

NCF recently published an article titled “The solvable crisis: Safe water for the whole world” based on interviews with me and colleagues from Water4, Water Mission, Lifewater International, and Living Water. As the article shares, we are aligned within the water sector that the global water crisis is something that can be solved with everyone doing their part.
