Welcome to the third edition of the World Vision Insider. As a member of our World Vision Philanthropy family, we hope you enjoy this special inside look at the work donors like you are making possible.
In this edition, you'll see updates on our COVID-19 response, read an honest and heartfelt devotional about our current times, watch some inspiring videos and learn about our summer campaign.
But first - an encouraging update. Did you know that thanks to your faithful support, in the last 5 years, World Vision has provided nearly 180,000 Bibles in 10 countries? On average one Bible will serve 5 people, so this has allowed 900,000 people access to God's Word! Thank you!
World Vision's COVID-19 response
Thanks to your support, World Vision is responding to COVID-19 in every country where we have field operations. This response, which spans over 70 countries and will last for 18 months, is addressing the immediate information, health, and hygiene needs of children and families. And it's helping them stay resilient in the face of secondary impacts of the pandemic — like decreased income, food security, and child protection — that could lead to the highest rate of extreme poverty and hunger in decades.
Globally, World Vision has reached nearly 44 million people — including 18.4 million children — with resources to limit the spread of COVID-19 and reduce its impact on their communities. Highlights include distributing nearly 3.8 million handwashing supplies and hygiene kits, equipping more than 200,000 frontline medical personnel with personal protective equipment (PPE), and providing $21 million in cash and vouchers to the most vulnerable families to help feed their children and keep a roof over their heads.
Over the past 130 days, you have made it possible for us to distribute nearly 23,000 Family Emergency Kits (each able to feed a family of five for a week), 320,000 PPE items, and over 290,000 Fresh Food Boxes — in total serving over 1 million people in 35 cities across the U.S.
So much to cry about these days A devotional by Sherree Funk, World Vision partner and National Leadership Council Member.
There is so much to lament in our world today – a global pandemic, economic downturn, social/political/racial tensions...We feel the malaise in our own souls as well. The unknown is becoming greater than the known...
There was a time when all the people of Israel felt the same malaise. It was called The Exile. During the Babylonian exile, Jeremiah wrote poems of lament, now preserved in the book of Lamentations. They never expected to wake up one day and be forced to live in a far-away place where all the customs and protocols were unfamiliar. “How deserted lies the city, once so full of people!” – (Lamentations 1:1) The exiles felt distant from God, from other believers, from the now destroyed temple. They could not sing. They wept.
Our summer fundraising campaign supports the Investing in Women Fund. This fund provides recovery loans to women small business owners (such as Heydi, pictured above with 4-year-old daughter Ashley) in fragile contexts who have had to shut their doors due to COVID-19 restrictions and use their savings to provide for their families.
Your support will help nearly 780,000 women around the world restart their businesses after pandemic restrictions have eased, which will in turn benefit nearly 3.4 million children. For every three women who receive a microfinance loan, 10 children benefit, and one additional job is created or sustained. And thanks to World Vision's expert involvement in capital markets, your gift will immediately multiply 2.2 times in impact.

COVID-19 aftershocks: economic tsunami hits the poorest
On July 7, 2020, World Vision released a major report called Out of Time.World Vision gathered field-level data from 24 countries that shows COVID-19 is already affecting parents' and caregivers' ability to meet the needs of their children. Our assessment confirms that projections made by the UN and other global agencies about the impact of the pandemic on the extreme poor are already happening.
Millions of parents and caregivers have lost income due to COVID-19. Sixty-nine percent of people surveyed now earn less than half of their pre-pandemic income.
World Vision is a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families, and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice.
In 2019, 87 percent of World Vision's total operating expenses were used for programs that benefit children, families, and communities in need. Learn More.
