6.8 million people benefited from work supported by U.S. donors in fiscal year 2017. Thank you for giving generously to transform the lives of children and families in need.
Thank you for your commitment to empowering millions of women and girls. You are helping to ensure they have opportunities to reach their potential and build healthier families and communities. Your support of a full range of interventions—from water, food, health, and education to economic development and child protection—allows communities to work toward solutions, improved lives, and renewed hope.
More than 60 percent of people living in extreme poverty are women and girls. World Vision is responding in many of the communities where women and girls struggle the most. Solving the puzzle of poverty requires a full plan and a full range of services—water, food, health, education, economic opportunities, and child protection— in partnership with faith leaders who promote gender equality. Through signature initiatives in these areas, with your partnership, much progress occurred between October 2016 and September 2017.
Thank you for your generous support of the Improved Incomes and Clean Water program that is helping to meet the needs of 22,500 people in Nyamagabe.
Nyamagabe is one of eight World Vision area programs (APs) that are covered by Rwanda THRIVE (Transforming Household Resilience in Vulnerable Environments), our signature economic empowerment program in Rwanda. In addition to improving incomes, this program will provide clean water access to 5,500 households.
The Spirit of God is moving, bringing new life into local church ministries. Thank you for partnering in this work that God has entrusted to us. 420,128 people benefited from ministry activities in fiscal year 2017. Your partnership with World Vision makes this all possible. Thank you for your commitment to sharing the gospel throughout the world.
In fiscal year 2017, we helped provide access to clean water for 3.2 million people, improved sanitation facilities for 3.3 million people, and improved hygiene practices for 3.9 million people. We thank God for the progress we have been able to make over the past several years, and we pray diligently for His continued guidance as we press on toward the future.
2.6 million people in Africa were provided with access to clean drinking water in fiscal year 2017. In addition to providing clean water, the program reached 2.1 million sanitation beneficiaries and 3.3 million hygiene beneficiaries during the year. Let us rejoice together in thanking God for what He has accomplished through the Africa WASH Program.
366,591 people were provided with access to maternal and child health and nutrition services, which included 197,079 children younger than 5 during fiscal year 2017. A recent random sampling of beneficiaries in Uganda showed the percentage of women having their babies in a health facility increased from 55 percent to 71 percent, and families with access to safe water improved from 59 percent to 86 percent. Thank you for sharing your blessings to provide these tools for transformation. Your gifts are making a difference.
1.5 million people were provided with access to economic empowerment activities during fiscal year 2017.
We have deployed THRIVE (Transforming Household Resilience in Vulnerable Environments) in five countries, integrating proven approaches to increase incomes and strengthen resilience of rural families and communities. Our pathway out of poverty focuses on building secure livelihoods and market access, through strengthening the ability of families to radically improve their income-growing capacities.
In the past year, our projects empowered children to protect themselves through life skills education, training, and peer support groups. We helped vulnerable children to enroll and remain in school by reducing the financial strain on families. As children gained leadership skills, they became advocates for preventing the abuse of children.
Thank you for your faithful support.
