Committed to continuous learning and transparency, World Vision commissioned TANGO—an industry-leading research organization—to evaluate the performance and impact of our proprietary livelihoods model, Transforming Household Resilience in Vulnerable Environments (THRIVE).
The study evaluated outcomes of the 8-year project in rural Tanzania which ran from 2013 to 2021, and one of the most exciting portions of the final report was the impact THRIVE had on women:
Women joined in income generation and decision-making
Women were empowered, having their own money, savings, and income sources
Marital relationships improved and there was a decrease in domestic violence
Men increasingly recognized women as capable leaders
TANGO reported that one of the key reasons that incomes are now 10 times higher than when the work started is that women have been included in income generation. One female focus group discussion summarized what was said in many female and male focus group discussions: “We women have filled the income gap that existed prior to the project activities because now we are no longer consumers but are now actively generating income for our households.”
