What children around the world say brings them joy

Four boys wearing red and white school uniforms smile widely with their arms around each other.

For these friends, joy is spending time together during a break at school in Zimbabwe.

Joyful children have hearts that burn with love. Their pure pleasure in the smallest of things, that sudden burst of happiness, fills us with delight, too.

We asked children all over the world, “What is joy to you?” Here is what they said.

Announcement: World Vision receives $79 million grant for clean water in Ethiopia

A World Vision staff member smiles while clean water sprays from a water point.

A new grant will help World Vision reach more than 1.6 million people with clean water.

The Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) has granted World Vision $79 million to reach 700 schools, healthcare facilities, and neighboring communities in Ethiopia with clean water over five years. The CIFF–funded effort, called “Water4 Life+,” will reach 10 districts in eight regions of Ethiopia that were selected in consultation with the national government. The project is expected to benefit more than 1.6 million people.

This is the largest water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) grant World Vision has received from a private foundation. It was made possible through the generosity of private donors who have invested in Ethiopia’s WASH program for many years, enabling the team to become a leader in the development of WASH services. This effort will promote transformation across Ethiopia, gather evidence and learnings for future work in schools and healthcare facilities, and play a leading role in solving the global water crisis.

In focus: 2022 Strong Women Strong World™ event

A young girl from Turkana, Kenya, wearing stacked red, yellow, and black beaded necklaces has a thoughtful expression.

On December 2, World Vision hosted the 18th annual Strong Women Strong World™ event. Attendees gathered in New York City to learn, pray, and raise support for the most pressing humanitarian need of our time — the global hunger crisis.

Hosted by Erin Johnson, executive producer of Entertainment Tonight, the event included powerful performances by musician Wé Ani McDonald and spoken word artist Gloria Umanah. Compelling speakers and videos immersed participants in the harsh realities of the global hunger crisis while also sharing the hope that’s rising — as World Vision seeks to reach more than 22 million people in 26 countries with the largest global response in our history.

Catastrophic earthquake devastates Turkey and Syria

People walk on heaps of rubble in front of the shell of a building ruined from the earthquake in northwestern Syria.

Freezing temperatures, snowfall, and damaged roads hindered frantic search and rescue efforts for survivors trapped under toppled buildings after a deadly 7.8 magnitude earthquake devastated southeastern Turkey (officially the Republic of Türkiye) and northwest Syria on February 6, 2023. Two weeks later, on February 20, 2023, an additional 6.3 magnitude earthquake hit southern Turkey, causing additional deaths and injuries.

Please pray for children and families in Turkey and Syria whose lives have been upended by this disaster and for our staff who are responding to the needs.
